Decorator-Style Home Organization

Have you ever looked at images of "minimalist" spaces in magazines which look amazingly bare and thought "I don’t want to live in a depressing home like that!"

But an organized home doesn't have to be like that. Home organization isn't about form, it's about function. Decluttering your home is about getting rid of all the junk which you don’t want, don’t like and don’t need. You keep the things you need, use and love. Getting your home organized means being able to quickly and easily find the objects you’ve decided to keep whenever you need them. Neither requires a specific decorating look – so you can make your decluttered and organized room look just as stylish and beautiful as you desire.

Storage doesn't have to be in cabinets, although probably you want a fair amount to be so. It’s a fine idea to mix open and closed shelving so that you can contrast a visually uncluttered area of closed storage (hiding the necessary but not terribly pretty objects) with a more exciting visual feast of open display.

If you’re someone who likes to see lots of things displayed to view, that’s fine too. Just be aware of how things look when you get them, even very ordinary objects like food packets. If you have the choice, buy items which are decorative and even color-matched as well as necessary.

Even a very eclectic mix of everyday stuff can look organized if you create order by the way you arrange them. Matching open shelf units which cover a large area, especially if the shelving itself is unusual in color or design, can impose an ordered grid on the objects stored in it. The closer together the shelving grid, the more organized it will look. Repeating the shelving style within the same space, or throughout the house, gives a more ordered look.

One important factor is to include display space for things you love to admire. These can be displayed in groups, or individually with space around them so that each individual object stands out as something important. Rotating objects on display makes each one more special, as well: you never get so used to seeing it that it disappears.

While we enjoy seeing the posessions we love, there are other things we don’t need to see and which can make a space look disorganized. Some of the worst problems here are power and data cords, in their many variations. If you’re redecorating a space from scratch, it's a fine idea to design in concealment from the beginning – for example, there are hollow baseboard systems which act as wiring raceways all around the room, as well as many other methods which will work. If you’re simply reorganizing an existing space, take every opportunity to hide cords inside furniture and use cable wraps to corral the spaghetti of cables around a lot of electronic systems. It's a good idea to keep power and data cables separate, as the fields around power cables can cause interference with data.

A great way of checking how you’re getting on is to snap photos of the space. Our eyes and brains are amazingly good at “editing out” mess we don’t want to see, but a picture shows every detail of how things really look. Keep rearranging and checking with pictures until your space looks how you want it to – then grab a well-earned break and relax in your stylishly organized space!
